January 31st, 2012

I have been to the doctor and he prescribes me an antibiotic for 7 days but it gets expensive and I get it frequently.

I would say your sexual partner is reinfecting you! He needs to be treated as well. Both of you need antibiotics for at least 7 days if not more at this point.

I took a med. for bacterial vaginosis but I have a yeast infection…?

January 13th, 2012

I have all the symptoms for a yeast infection but instead of buying me Monistat like I requested my mom came home with a prescription drug called metronidazole vaginal gel from my uncle (who is a doctor). I was skeptical about it but used it anyways. Now I did some research on it and found out it is used to treat bacterial vaginosis and is ineffective against yeast infections!

I only took one dose but will it hurt me now if I went and started using something else like Monistat?

Well, do you know for sure it is a yeast infection? Bacterial vaginosis usually has an odor that goes along with it and a yeast infection does not. But no, it will not hurt you.

Can I use Cephalexin 500MG to treat Bacterial Vaginosis?

December 10th, 2011

I have a never ending battle with BV, I try home remedies and eating alot of yogurt but nothing ever seems to help. I happened to have a leftover rx for Cephalexin and I was wondering if I could use it to save a trip to the doctor.

Nope. Cephalexin won’t treat BV. You need a new Rx.

BTW, unless you had a bad reaction to it, you should NEVER have any leftover antibiotics. You should take then all.

This is very true a course of anti biotics given to you by your doctor should be taken in full at the time or prescription. The anti biotics will not take effect if you do not take them all.

September 2nd, 2011

The best treatment for Bacterial Vaginosis is Flagyl, not keflex. Flagyl is available in a pill form you will take the pill usually twice daily for 5 to 7 days, or they have intravaginal cream called metrogel that you can use as well.

How do I treat my bacterial vaginosis?

June 30th, 2011

I went to the doctor yesterday and she told me I had bacterial vaginosis and she gave me some cream for it (similar to treatment for yeast infections) The directions werent clear on how long to keep it in there, or how soon it would work. When do I know that its cleared up? For some reason I think I should be on antibiotics…will the cream cure it?

vaginitis is an inflammation of the vagina that can result in discharge, itching and pain. The cause is usually a change in the normal balance of vaginal bacteria or an infection.

Bacterial vaginosis. This type of vaginitis results from overgrowth of one of several organisms normally present in your vagina, upsetting the natural balance of vaginal bacteria.

This type of bacterial vaginosis can be treated with Metronidazole (Flagyl, MetroGel) or Clindamycin (Cleocin) as tablets or vaginal gels or creams. You can ask your doctor or pharmacist to prescribe/supply this. It will be effective.

If the above medication is effective you should take the following precautions for prevention and recurrance of vaginosis.

Good hygiene may prevent some types of vaginitis from recurring and may relieve some symptoms:

-Avoid baths, hot tubs and whirlpool spas.
-Avoid irritants.
-Wipe from front to back after using the toilet.
-Don’t douche.
-Use a male latex condom. -
-Wear cotton underwear and pantyhose with a cotton crotch.
-Don’t wear underwear to bed.
-Eat yogurt that contains active lactobacillus cultures. -
