I am completely embarrassed to ask, but I just had to make sure.
After puberty, I always have discharge. I used to be frightened that the discharge was a health issue, but my doctor assured me that it was normal. Therefore, I accepted her answer.

However, there are many times that there is a strong odor down there. To me, I admit it smells like… potatoes, or fries. Ew, right? It doesn’t smell fishy to me, like what bacterial vaginosis should smell like. I can even smell it through jeans, if I’m sitting down and my knees are slightly apart. I don’t think the odor is strong enough to be apparent to other people, though.

Along with the odor is discharge. It’s kind of like thick white mucus, but when dried, it’s clumpy and kind of yellow-gray-green. Usually just one clump.

I’m sorry to gross you guys all out… but I just had to make sure. Do these sound like symptoms of bacterial vaginosis?

Thank you guys so much.

It could be yeast infection or maybe BV. See your doctor asap to be sure.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the name of a condition in women where the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina is disrupted and replaced by an overgrowth of certain bacteria. It is sometimes accompanied by discharge, odor, pain, itching, or burning.

Women with BV may have an abnormal vaginal discharge with an unpleasant odor. Some women report a strong fish-like odor, especially after intercourse. Discharge, if present, is usually white or gray; it can be thin. Women with BV may also have burning during urination or itching around the outside of the vagina, or both. However, most women with BV report no signs or symptoms at all.

Since men don't get bacterial vaginosis, male sex partners of women diagnosed with this infection do not need to be treated. Female sex partners of women with bacterial vaginosis may benefit from being examined.

Vaginal Infection Symptoms

Vaginal discharge, itching, and burning are common symptoms of the various forms of vaginitis. Although the symptoms of these infections can be very similar, there are some differences to look for in the color and smell of the discharge.

Some vaginal discharge is quite common and normal for women of childbearing age. Normally, cervical glands produce a clear mucous secretion that drains downward, mixing with bacteria, discarded vaginal cells, and Bartholin gland secretions at the opening of the vagina. These substances may (depending on how much mucus there is) turn the mucus a whitish color, and the discharge turns yellowish when exposed to air. There are times throughout the menstrual cycle that the cervical glands produce more mucus than others, depending on the amount of estrogen produced. This is normal.

Sexual excitement and emotional stress have both been associated with a normal vaginal discharge. This discharge is a clear, mucus-like secretion.

If your vaginal discharge is abnormal in color such as green, has a foul smell, changes consistency, or is significantly increased or decreased in amount, you may be developing a form of vaginitis.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) causes an abnormal vaginal discharge with an unpleasant odor. Some women report a strong fishlike smell, especially after intercourse. The discharge is usually white or gray. It can be thin. You may also have burning during urination or itching around the outside of the vagina, or both. Some women with BV have no symptoms at all.
Yeast infections or candidiasis cause a thick, whitish-gray “cottage cheese” type of vaginal discharge and may be itchy. You may have intense itching in your genitals. Painful urination and intercourse are common. You may not always have a vaginal discharge. Men with genital candidiasis may have an itchy rash on the penis. Most male partners of women with yeast infection do not experience any symptoms of the infection.
Trichomoniasis causes a frothy vaginal discharge that may be yellow-green or gray, itching and irritation of the genitals, burning with urination (sometimes confused with a urinary tract infection), discomfort during intercourse, and a foul smell. Because trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted disease, symptoms may appear within 4-20 days after exposure. Men rarely have symptoms, but if they do, they may have a thin, whitish discharge from the penis and painful or difficult urination.
Pain itself is not a frequent symptom (except for the itching) and should prompt you to see your health care provider.
If you have a condition called vulvodynia, you may have burning, stinging, irritation, or rawness of your genitalia but no infection or skin disease of the vulva or vagina. You may have pain, off and on. This is a different condition that requires further diagnosis with your health care provider.

at first, it itched VERY VERY BAD. & my discharge was so heavy that i had to put on a pad so it wouldn't get through to my pants. when my discharge dried on to my pad, it was very yellow. now it's whitish with a lil yellow to it. sometimes, i can smell it just from sitting down. other times, i can't at all. it doesn't itch constant, just sometimes. & yes it does have an odor. i heard that yeast infections dont have any kind of odor, well at first it smelled really bad and now not so bad at all. but theres a lil ickyness to the smell (not like it was).

Yes it sounds like a yeast infection, go to the doctor asap.

I may have bacterial vaginosis, what now?

I haven't been diagnosed yet, but I think I may have the right symptoms for bacterial vaginosis (foul smell, itchy). I'm on my period so I don't know if I'm having weird discharge. I also just lost my virginity, which I heard can add to the cause (new sexual partner).
I've never been to a gynecologist. I want to seek treatment/diagnosis from a doctor but this is something that I can't let my parents find out about; should I go to Planned Parenthood, or can I go to a gynecologist w/o my parents finding out? Also I'm not sure how I'd pay for all of this so would Planned Parenthood be free?

ALSO, are there any home remedies I can try in the meantime (I've heard yogurt)?

First off if you are just going off of foul smell & itchy you might be over reacting. There are many other issues with those symptoms. It does not matter where you go they are not allowed to discuss your visit with your parents. Look into your state because some states do have loop holes where they can call your parents on certain cases (i.e. pregnancy, etc in a minor). Planned Parenthood goes off of your income, Health Department goes off of your income. My recommendation: Talk to your mother. She may be upset for a while but she WILL appreciate you being honest with her.

If you do yogurt it has to be plain yogurt…

Bacterial Vagi Symptoms

What are the most common bacterial vagi symptoms. Many women will have bacterial vaginosis and not display any symptoms at all. Others will be unlucky and have multiply symptoms.

The main bacterial vagi symptoms include a vaginal discharge that is grayish in color and of a watery consistency. This discharge is usually accompanied but not always with a foul smelling odor, this can be fishy or musty both of which are very unpleasant. Some other symptoms can include itching and swelling to the vagina, stomach cramps similar to menstrual cramps. Some women complain of headaches, nausea and just a general feeling of being unwell.

What ever your bacterial vagi symptoms may be you will want to get treatment for your BV as soon as possible. Good treatments are available you just need to know where to look. Vaginosis Cure

So what is the best Vaginosis Cure?

Welll it really is not as simple as that there are many things that will help clear you of Bacterial Vaginosis for good. OK yes a prescribed course of antibiotics will clear BV but it will not stop it returning especially if you are doing the same things you were before the antibiotics.

You need something to fight the cause of the BV not just the symptoms and this could be as simple as changing the way you wash. Personal hygiene should be very high that goes with out saying but during any out breaks of bacterial vaginosis you should take extra care, do not over wash the vagina though as this can do as much damage as good. Try to avoid scented soaps or new products not tried before.

The best vaginosis cure is actually a combination of many different things that when put together builds up your bodies own defense against the infection. Another big recommendation  from me is cotton undies. OK so your frilly synthetic pants may look more sexy but believe me you will notice the difference straight away with cotton as it allows the vagina to breath.

I’m always updating the vaginosis cure list so check back for other quick and easy fixes against bacterial vaginosis
