The most common causes of vaginosis are having sex with multiple new partners, going anal-to-vaginal without both partners (and especially the male, if there is a man involved) having a hot shower with lots of soap and water in between, and wearing thong underwear. (The strip of the thong conducts bacteria between the two openings.) Vulva-to-vulva contact, as between lesbian lovers, can also transmit it.

It can also recur time and again from a single infection, which is why treating it properly with prescription drugs is so important.

Recurrent ‘Bacterial Vaginosis’ can be very traumatic to live with. Sometimes after taking all the creams, potions and antibiotics the problem still comes back time after time. After suffering with recurrent bacterial vaginosis (BV) for nearly 3 years I eventually found a totally natural cure. The claim was to be clear of bacterial vaginosis in 3 days. Imagine my delight when I found the claims to be totally true. If you have bacterial vaginosis for the first time or have had recurrent bacterial vaginosis for some time this is something you really should consider looking at Bacterial Vaginosis Help – The 3 Day Cure

How do you find out if you have it? What kind of testing is involved? Can you have it for along time and not really know it? Will it go away on its own, or do you need antibiotics?

Yes, it can. It can also cause a yeast infection. The symptoms of yeast is a thick "cottage cheese-like" discharge with redness and itching but rarely any odor. BV has a thick foul smelling yellowish to greenish discharge. The doctor will take a swab of the vagina and look at it under a microscope. It's a pretty quick test and easy to diagnose. If it's fungal, Monistat is over the counter. If it's BV you'll need antibiotics.
It's not necessarily the lake water that can cause the problem, it's being in wet clothing, especially tight spandex like a swimsuit, that will cause the bacteria or yeast to grow. It's best to get out of a wet suit and dry off as soon as possible. Good luck

Recurrent ‘Bacterial Vaginosis’ can be very traumatic to live with.
I can't take the medication for 3 more weeks but I'm worried about letting this infection go 3 more weeks esp. if it causing me to spot.

Reaaallly scared!

Also, what can I do other than shower twice a day, and NO sex to help until I can take the medicine?

Can none of these people read? Obviously you said you were diagnosed, so obviously you went to the Doctor.. Anyways, dont worry about it. I remember with my first I had it and got treated during the second trimester and everything was fine. My son was fine also. If the doctor is not worried, then you shouldnt either. I know its easier said than done, but it wont cause any harm to the baby. BV is common during pregnancy. I never spotted, while I had that, but spotting during pregnancy also can be normal., because I did spot at 7 weeks with my 3rd son and all was fine.

I recently started having sex, which I think prompted my first ever problem down there. I went to the gyno for the first time and I was diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis. My doctor gave me the antibiotic metronidazol to clear it up. However, the more I look into it, it sounds like taking the antibiotic can cause a yeast infection. Is this just other types of antibiotics? Or am I likely to get a yeast infection now?

Taking an antibiotic can cause a yeast infection because it can sometimes kill the good bacteria with the bad. It’s not something certain that is going to happen. I’ve taken many antibiotics over the years and have never ended up with a yeast infection because of them. Just take the antibiotic your doc gave you for the infection, and if you develop a yeast infection, call the doctor back. You need to kill the bad bacteria, and then you can worry about getting your body back into balance through medication for yeast infections.

both vaginosis and acne are usually preventable by maintaining hygeine….but yes, many medications cause yeast infections although those are most commonly antibiotics. Yeast infections can be caused by many things, some people are also just more prone to getting them. But I do recommend showering daily, it is good for your health and will actually help you concentrate better….

My period is almost two weeks late now. I KNOW that I’m NOT pregnant because I have been practicing abstinence for the past year. Can this infection be the cause of my missed period? I have never missed a period, other than the time I was pregnant with my daughter so this is not a usual thing for me. I am a little bit worried. Thanks in advance to anyone that answers.

This condition does not normally affect the menstrual cycle.

I strongly suggest you contact your OB/GYN as soon as possible.

Now as a sidebar, don't worry. It is probably just the stress of worrying about this infection that is delaying your period.

But the best thing for you to do is to contact your doctor so he/she can put you at east.

Take care and I wish you well.

I have had it at least 6 times this year alone. I keep going and getting treated, but it comes back in a couple of months. Could my bf have it and keeps giving it back to me? He doesn't show any symptoms of having it though.
So is this actually an STD? I have never cheated on him. I have been to the doctor several times since we have been together to get tested. I am clean except for this. Do guys have symptoms at all?
Do you know of any home remedies? Other than the ones suggested.

BV (Bacterial vaginosis) is NOT an STD.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) results from an overgrowth of organisms that are normally present in the vagina. Usually, "good" bacteria outnumber "bad" bacteria in your vagina. But if bad bacteria become too numerous, they upset the balance and bacterial vaginosis results. This type of vaginitis (bacterial vaginosis) can spread during sexual intercourse, but it also occurs in people who aren't sexually active. Women with new or multiple sex partners, as well as women who douche or use an intrauterine device (IUD) for birth control, have a higher risk of bacterial vaginosis.

If you have been diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis (BV), you can use lactobacillus (as in yogurt) to help restore the balance of vaginal bacteria, either along with or instead of antibiotic treatment. If you are pregnant, remember to avoid vaginal administration of any treatment. Lactobacillus organisms stop the growth of harmful bacteria, boost the immune system, and increase resistance to infection.

Men can NOT get BV so he is not passing it to you. Some women can get BV several times a year. Talk to your doctor about how they keep reoccurring for you and maybe there are some other options you can take.

Recurrent ‘Bacterial Vaginosis’ can be very traumatic to live with. Sometimes after taking all the creams, potions and antibiotics the problem still comes back time after time.
I had some swabs done for an STD because i had yellow discharge(gross i know) i had a lot of it, and the tests came back negative for an STD but positive for BV. Is the yellow discharge caused by BV? And does it damage any of the female parts(baby making parts)? Serious answers please!
Also, does BV give you any pain in your pelvis area?

DONT listen to the first answer. Bacterial vaginosis is perfectly normal, some women get it frequently. Bacterial vaginosis is vaginal condition that can produce vaginal discharge and results from an overgrowth of normal bacteria in the vagina. So yes, the yellow discharge was from the infection, yellow discharge CAN be a sign of an STD, but you were tested, so that wasn’t the cause. Bacterial vaginosis is not dangerous, but it can cause disturbing symptoms. The amount of vaginal discharge that is considered normal varies from woman to woman. Therefore, any degree of vaginal discharge that is abnormal for a particular woman should be evaluated. Many women with bacterial vaginosis actually have no symptoms at all. Others experience an unpleasant fishy odor with vaginal discharge. The discharge is usually thin and grayish white. The discharge is often more noticeable after sexual intercourse.

Most of the time, a doctor will prescribe some anti-biotics to clear it up, but most won’t, because it’s likely that they will just give you a yeast infection. Bacterial Vaginosis will clear up on it’s own naturally.

And no, Bacterial Vaginosis will not cause any long-term effects on the vagina or uterus. However, if you have the infection while you are pregnant. In pregnancy, bacterial vaginosis can cause premature labor, premature birth, infection of the amniotic fluid, and infection of the uterus after delivery. However, treatment of bacterial vaginosis in pregnancy has not been shown decrease the incidence of premature births in most studies.

Recurrent ‘Bacterial Vaginosis’ can be very traumatic to live with. Sometimes after taking all the creams, potions and antibiotics the problem still comes back time after time.
