was diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis and just started taking the antibiotics today. The doctor prescribed me 500 mg, 2 a day for 7 days. I have heard that sometimes it doesn't clear the infection and also sometimes causes yeast infection. My doctor said nothing about yeast, how will i know if my infection is cleared after taking the antibiotics, or if i have formed a yeast infection. Also, has anyone had to taket his antibiotic? Any weird side effects besides NO drinking of alcohol, i know. ? ALSO: When do symptoms start to clear up whil taking the antibiotics? I'm on my second day. Also my DR, said its non transmitable and said nothing about sex, can i have sex during treatment using a condom?

Yes an antibiotic can cause a yeast infection. It feeds the candida already present in our bodies and they can overgrow. You will know if you have a yeast infection because you will start to itch in the genital area and occasionally on other parts of your body as well. You will also get a white dicharge that looks like cottage cheese.

You may need a follow up appt. with your Dr. to re-test after finishing your antibiotic to be sure the bacterial infection cleared. If after you finish it, you have the same symptoms that made you seek treatment to begin with, you should be re-tested. If you find you have the symptoms of a yeast infection you can get an over the counter medication to treat it.

Do you and your partner a favor and always use a condom, especially while you have an infection. Your own immune system is lower and you need to take the extra precaution. Not only that, if you do get a yeast infecton, you can give that to your partner and then he can pass it back to you. No fun having to be treated again, when you could have prevented it to begin with.

As for your antibiotic, read your lable or the insert that came with it for the list of possible side effects. You did not name the kind of antibiotic prescribed. If you still can't figure it out call the pharmacy where you had it filled and ask the pharmicist what to watch for as possible allergic reactions. You can have a reaction even if you have taken the same medication safely in the past. Some restrict you from exposure to sunlight due to the increased sensitivity to the sun the medication can cause. So call and ask if you don't have the insert that was sent along with it.
